Program Manager, Scalable Solutions

Dr. John Schiel joined ARPA-H as a Program Manager in December 2024. Prior to joining ARPA-H, Schiel led a research team focused on developing innovative analytical characterization methods for next-generation biotherapeutics, such as monoclonal antibodies (mAbs), viral vectors, cell therapy products, and vaccines, and mitigating risks associated with new technologies. Schiel also spearheaded the development of the National Institute of Standards and Technology’s mAb Reference Material (NISTmAb).

As the Federal Technical Program Manager for the National Institute for Innovation in Manufacturing Biopharmaceuticals (NIIMBL), he oversaw programs aimed at accelerating the adoption of advanced biomanufacturing technologies and enhancing pandemic preparedness and response. Schiel has extensive experience in federal interagency coordination and has contributed to shaping national biomanufacturing policy and priorities.

He is the author of over 50 publications and national strategy reports, an editor of three books, and the recipient of prestigious honors, including the Department of Commerce Gold Medal and the Arthur S. Flemming Award. Schiel earned his doctorate in chemistry from the University of Nebraska and completed postdoctoral work at NIST.
