Ileana Hancu, Ph.D.

Dr. Ileana Hancu joined ARPA-H in May 2023 from the National Cancer Institute (NCI), part of the U.S. National Institutes of Health, where she was a program director in the Image Guided Interventions Branch of the Cancer Imaging Program.
Prior to joining NCI, Hancu spent 18 years as a research scientist at General Electric’s Research Center in Niskayuna, NY. Her research focused on developing sophisticated imaging technology – including hardware, software, and image analytics – to help clinicians better diagnose cancer without the need for biopsies. She has also served as a scientific review officer in the Imaging, Surgery, and Bioengineering Review Branch at the NIH’s Center for Scientific Review. Hancu has a doctorate in physics from the University of Pittsburgh and a broad background in basic, translational, and clinical imaging science.
