Using sonogenetics to replace pharmaceuticals

Currently, systemic pharmaceutical treatments cause off-target side effects, are delivered at sub-optimal doses, and fail to address many chronic conditions. The performer team will develop a method to treat conditions with ultrasound by using gene therapy to express ultrasound-sensitive proteins in specific cells—a concept called sonogenetics. Sonogenetics is a new alternative to pharmaceuticals that can directly change cellular activity with temporal and spatial precision. If successful, the team will develop a new, non-pharmaceutical modality for treating chronic conditions.
