SCOPE: Scalable Cell Therapies Using Optimized Phenotyping and Enrichment

In this project, Exthymic is developing a first-in-class, end-to-end, automated manufacturing cell therapy platform to enable adaptive process control of a therapy’s key features. SCOPE enables manufacturing of personalized cell therapies closer to where patients receive care and with increased patient-relevant quality.

Today, too many patients face long waits for cell therapies because manufacturing is slow, expensive, and generated in a small number of specialized facilities. Those delays can be life altering for people with aggressive diseases who need timely treatment. Moreover, existing manufacturing systems have borrowed legacy process monitoring technologies that have limited ability to account for patient variability or to inform or adapt manufacturing in real time to unleash the true potential of cell therapies.

Exthymic's platform is designed to combine several innovative manufacturing and quality steps into one compact, easy-to-operate system. If successful, it could meaningfully expand the number of sites capable of producing cell therapies, reduce turnaround times from 31 days to under a week and reduce manufacturing costs by 75 percent or more. By replacing a process with limited visibility into real-time quality with one that is more information rich and actionable, SCOPE aims to expand access to lifesaving cell therapies for more patients, including those in underserved communities and those with rare or pediatric diseases.
