STORM: Sensor Technology for cytOkine Response Monitoring
This project aims to keep patients undergoing immunotherapy out of the hospital by developing a wearable device capable of detecting Cytokine Release Syndrome (CRS) early enough to enable timely return for critical care. The team will create a minimally invasive, wearable early-warning system employing an aptamer-based biosensor that continuously monitors key immune-response cytokines, including interleukin-6 (IL-6) and interferon-γ (IFN-γ). These biomarkers are central to the body's inflammatory response.
Designed to benefit patients battling highly aggressive cancers such as leukemias and lymphomas, the technology will be validated in a clinical setting with patients undergoing Chimeric Antigen Receptor (CAR) T-cell therapy. If successful, this innovation could transform care by allowing patients to be safely monitored at home for life-threatening side effects earlier than now possible, dramatically reducing the cost and burden of therapy while expanding earlier, more effective access to these life-saving treatments.
